In 2006, while working at the University of Michigan, I was walking through the Michigan Union on the way to lunch one day and ran into a student led drive to sign individuals up to the Be The Match program. I thought sure, why not. I already donate blood to the American Red Cross to help save a life, why not be a stem cell donor.

Six years later, I received a call from the local Michigan partner of Be The Match, Michigan Blood, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, that I might be a match for someone in need of a stem cell donation. I agreed and went through a series of blood collection that was sent for further investigation. In late November 2012, I finally found out that I was the best match for someone in need of a life saving procedure. Needless to say, I said yes and made my donation of 350 million stem cells on December 18, 2012.
My package was flown overseas and delivered to my patient within two days. We've exchanged cards over the past few years. Out of 10 million people on the National Register, I was the best match for this individual. It does change your perspective on life and what it means to save a life.
In 2013, I worked with Michigan Blood and State Sen. Dave Hildenbrand (R-Grand Rapids) to create a new vehicle license plate for Be The Match. The legislation was introduced in April 2014 and signed into law by Gov. Rick Snyder in December 2014. The plate finally went on sale in April 2016. It's the first of its kind in the United States.

Here's the Be The Match license plate that is for sale through the Michigan Secretary of State's office.
I've been part of several Be The Match drives in Linden, Fenton Chamber business expo, Nursing Club at University of Michigan-Flint and the Michigan Municipal League's annual Legislative Conference held in Lansing.
As your State Representative, I will work with the Michigan Secretary of State to create opportunities for individuals to join the Be The Match registry as you renew your license plate tabs, register to vote, or renew your drivers license.
